Ban driven grouse shooting petition – 101,000 signatures! Thank you!

Our Ban Driven Grouse Shooting petition has passed the milestone of 100,000 signatures and is now standing at over 101,000 signatures. 100,000 signatures is the level that normally triggers a parliamentary debate on a subject.

Thank you to all who have signed – here is the link https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700036

Since the Westminster petitions process reopened after the general election, 1,686 petitions have been published. Of those 1,686 petitions, only 83 have so far passed the 10,000 signature threshold which generates a response from government. Only 15 petitions have, so far, passed the 100,000 signature threshold.

Of those 1,686 published petitions (and of the current top 83 which have passed 10,000 signatures) the ‘Ban driven grouse shooting’ petition is the 14th most signed. Here are the top 14 and four other environmental petitions further down the list;

  • 1. Call a general election 3million signatures

Here’s the signature map, by Westminster constituency, which shows where the signatures come from (as of yesterday evening):

When we passed 85,000 signatures there were 22 constituencies with over 300 signatures, now there are 40 so we are listing here the 22 constituencies with over 350 signatures:

Sheffield Hallam (Lab) 586 signatures

High Peak (Lab) 517 signatures

Skipton and Ripon (Con) 470 signatures

Westmorland and Lonsdale (LibDem) 450 signatures

South Devon (LibDem) 445 signatures

Central Devon (Con) 437 signatures

West Dorset (LibDem) 411 signatures

Ceredigion Preseli (Plaid) 408 signatures

Thirsk and Malton (Con) 404 signatures

Stroud (Lab) 377 signatures

Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey (SNP) 371 signatures

Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross (LibDem) 358 signatures

St Ives (LibDem) 355 signatures

Torridge and Tavistock (Con) 355 signatures

Argyll, Bute and Lochaber (SNP) 351 signatures

North Northumberland (Lab) 346 signatures

South Shropshire (Con) 339 signatures

North Herefordshire (Green) 338 signatures

There is a remarkable thing about this list – the position of Sheffield Hallam. In previous lists at 85,000 signatures, 75,000, 62,000, 55,000 and 47,000 (which takes us back to 22 January) Sheffield Hallam was fourth in the list but it has had a very rapid rise up the list to second now. Why is that?

On 12 April a team of volunteers started delivering leaflets in Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam has increased from 438 signatures to 578 signatures in that short time. The other four Sheffield constituencies have also fared well. We’ll look at the figures in more detail later but there is no doubt that leaflets bring results. Thank you to the leafleteers!
